Almost everyone who buys at Lake Oconee is buying into a gated community first, Reynolds, Harbor Club, Del Webb, one of the private clubs. What they don’t always plan for is how much of daily life still happens outside the gate, in Greensboro.
Greensboro is the historic Greene County seat, a real small town with a walkable Main Street square, antiques, local restaurants, the kind of downtown that existed long before any golf course did. Yesterday Cafe has been serving Southern comfort food, and a buttermilk pie people genuinely talk about, for years. Holcomb’s BBQ is the other long-running fixture most locals mention without being asked.
I bring this up because the club you join isn’t the only place you’ll spend your time. Groceries, doctors, the hardware store, a quiet dinner that isn’t at the clubhouse, that’s all Greensboro. Understanding the town is part of understanding whether the whole picture actually fits your life, not just the amenity brochure.
If you’re evaluating Lake Oconee, I always suggest spending an afternoon in downtown Greensboro before you tour a single property. It tells you something the club tour won’t.
